Safeguard Your Pupils...
The Internet has revolutionised the learning environment, opening up new dimensions of learning previously assigned to a dusty school library and dark classrooms which are now as wide and diverse as your pupils’ imaginations. Unfortunately, this is two-way traffic and as you open this door on your learning environment your pupils are at risk of cyber-bullying, paedophile grooming, pornography, intimidation and inappropriate behaviour following your pupils into their private spaces and outside school hours, for the pupil being bullied it can be a living nightmare.
The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre has warned that online predators are increasingly turning their attention to primary pupils and have advised primary teachers to give more advice to their pupils about internet dangers. Barely a week goes by without another incident of abuse dominating the headlines and at Rapid Technologies we think this is one incident too far.
Guarding Your Pupils
Traditional blocking and filtering systems are not enough to prevent exposure to contemporary dangers. Cyber-bullying and cries for help occur in unexpected or offline applications, such as MSN, chat rooms or Microsoft Word. These often go unmonitored or are subject only to random checks. Blocking all risky applications can be counter productive - this simply moves the school environment further from the'real-world' technology that today's children live and breathe. Plus, used responsibly, these applications can actually enrich the learning experience.
Ranger Guardian monitors text in every application - regardless of whether it is saved, sent or merely typed - online or off-line, and reports on offensive or suspicious words. A screenshot of any inappropriate activity is sent with the user name, PC name, date, time and offending word to the administrator for immediate action. Using Ranger Guardian, your teachers can identify incidents of bullying and uncover 'confessional' communications buried in Word, MSN, email and chat room correspondence.
Young children are astoundingly advanced in their use of technology. They use social networking sites, have eBay accounts, access the internet by mobile phone, and chat to people around the world via interactive games. Many children naively post their addresses on Bebo or Facebook and, more worrying, there have even been cases of primary-aged children meeting face-to face with adults they have met online. Rapid Technologies will work with you in partnership to protect your pupils and re-assure your parents while protecting your schools' reputation with any inappropriate behaviour detected being captured by Ranger Guardian to help identify and prosecute perpetrators.
